Sidwell Friends, a coeducational Quaker day school, seeks an Interim Lower School Art Teacher (1st-4th grades) for the 2020-2021 school year. The art program seeks to nurture each child’s creativity and challenges them to use art as a means of exploring new concepts and ideas and communicating their own big ideas about the world. The program provides our children with a strong grounding in the foundational elements of art, including line, shape, color, pattern, composition, form, texture, and scale. Students utilize a wide array of materials and techniques such as paper mache, painting, drawing, construction and assemblage, fiber arts, printmaking, collage and ceramics. Throughout the program, students are exposed to a diverse set of artists, movements and cultures throughout history, and the curriculum intentionally incorporates social and environmental justice themes.
Community projects are an important part of the Lower School art program and are organized by the art teacher. Additional duties include collaborating with teachers on plays, supporting our Lower School community performances (Grandparents and Special Friends’ Day, Holiday Program, etc.), performing recess duties, etc.
A BM/BS degree in Art Education (or comparable degree) and Lower School teaching experience is preferred. The ideal candidate will have a strong art background that includes both elementary teaching and pursuing one’s own artistic endeavors, as well as, demonstrating a strong lens towards equity, justice and diversity work when choosing materials and content. The successful candidate will have a collaborative spirit, an interest in building community within and beyond the classroom, a strong commitment to nurturing children’s individual talents and passions, and a commitment to our Quaker values.
This position is for the 2020-2021 school year, with a start date of August 2020.
