Sidwell Friends, a PK-12 co-educational Quaker day school with campuses in Washington, DC, and Bethesda, MD seeks an experienced and dynamic educator to serve as its Lower School Principal, starting July 1, 2018. The Principal is the chief administrative officer of the Lower School (292 students, grades PK-4), which is located on its own five-acre campus in Bethesda. The principal serves as a member of the senior administrative team, reports directly to the Head of School, and sits with the Board of Trustees. An interim Lower School Principal has been appointed for the 2017-18 school year.
The Lower School principal is responsible for the day-to-day operation of the division. The principal supports and evaluates an exceptional staff that includes an Academic Dean, Academic Support Coordinator, Instructional Coach, Counselor, and Grade-Level Coordinators, as well as 36 teachers. In addition, the principal works closely with student groups and is charged with building effective relationships with parents. The division offers an academically challenging curriculum with the flexibility to meet individual needs. The atmosphere is relaxed and informal, allowing students to benefit from individual exploration and structured inquiry. Quaker values permeate the program; service learning and a commitment to equity and justice are hallmarks of the Lower School.
A master’s degree or doctorate in an appropriate discipline is preferred, as is 7-10 years of both administrative and teaching experience in a lower school setting. Familiarity with the tenets and practices of the Religious Society of Friends is highly desirable. Applicants should have demonstrated success working in a dynamic and diverse environment; a history of supporting faculty growth and curriculum development; outstanding communication and leadership skills; humility and a sense of humor; and the ability to make independent decisions and work effectively with a team.
